Factors affecting development of stroke in hypertension patients

Abstract
Objective: We aimed to predict the risk of stroke in Korean hypertensive patients and to investigate the factors affecting development of stroke in patients with hypertension .

Method: We analysed 52,637 medical and health checkup data based on sample cohort data of National Health Insurance Corporation from 2002 to 2013 to get 10 year stroke risk and factors affecting development of stroke in newly diagnosed hypertension patients.

Results: 10 year stroke risk in Korean hypertension patients was 4.4%. Age, region, smoking, systolic blood pressure affect development of stroke at the time of hypertension diagnosis and age, region, smoking, exercise, systolic blood pressure affect development of stroke at the time just before stroke diagnosis.

Conclusion: The risk of stroke increased with older age, smoking, lower exercise intensity and higher systolic blood pressure in hypertension.
